Canon’s XF100 HD Professional Camcorder is an amazingly compact, fully featured pro video camera that imports nearly all the features and functionality of the 3-chip XF300 into a smaller, single sensor form factor. Taking advantage of the latest HD technology–along with Canon’s robust MPEG-2 4:2:2 codec–the XF100 records full HD video to affordable Compact Flash cards, making it as versatile as it is powerful. How to edit Canon XF100 video in FCP?

The XF100 uses Material Exchange Format (MXF) for its file structure–an internationally standardized container format for the exchange of video and audio material. Using the MXF format, video and audio can be wrapped into a single file along with important metadata. With MXF, the XF100 will not only benefit from the highest level of compatibility with NLE systems, but also with high-end network systems used by many networks and production studios.
Many users have problems when importing Canon MXF to FCP 6/7/X.

Example:

“I recently purchased a Canon XF series HD Camcorder and currently using Final Cut Pro X, but I can not load MXF footages to FCP X, can you help?”

“I’m using FCP 7. I haven’t found a way to bring MXF files into FCP. It’s kind of a pain, I’d prefer we were using the same files. Can I import and work with MXF in FCP?”

The best quality video codec for FCP is Apple ProRes codec MOV format, FCP can’t handle Canon MXF files smoothly, you will encounter many problems unless you convert the footages to prores codec via Drorsoft HD Video Converter for Mac, which supports Apple ProRes codec for output. You can choose Apple PreRes 422 (HQ) if you want to keep the original video parameters, but it will produce large files, in common situation, you are recommended to choose Apple ProRes 422 (*.mov) for output.

Here are some tips and tricks that you can use when you convert Canon MXF files to prores.

Tips:

a. If you want to merge MXF files, just need to select all files and click Merge.

b. You shouldn’t move the single MXF video out of the whole MXF whole structure folder, or the MXF video would loss some metadata, such as sound.

Tricks:

c. You’d better choose “Apple PreRes 422” for keeping original video quality.

d. If you want the files to be in smaller size, you can follow Final Cut Pro>Apple ProRes 422(LT)(*mov)/Apple ProRes 422(*mov) option.

e. If your files size is at SD levels, you are advised to choose Final Cut Pro>Apple ProRes 422(Proxy)(*mov), which is recommended for 480i/p and 576i/p shootings as well.

After Canon XF100 to FCP conversion, you can click “Open” button to get the converted video files. Now, you can import Canon XF100 to FCP for editing.
